Windows ME Dial-Up Setup

These instructions will help customers with Windows ME only. If you have any other version of Windows installed, please look at the other directions available on our Technical Support web site. 

Requirements:
Windows ME Installed and working properly.
28.8 modem or higher installed and working properly.

Getting Started:

The following steps will guide you through the process of creating a dial up networking connection for up.net in Windows ME.

1. Click Start > Settings > Dial-Up Networking.


 


2. Click Next on the Welcome to Dial-Up Networking screen.


 


3. Type up.net in the box as shown below then click Next.


 


4. On the next screen, enter 906 for the area code, and enter the access telephone number provide to you on your customer profile sheet. Then click Next.


 


5. When you are completed, click the Finish button to return to the Dial Up Networking Screen.


 




6. In figure 6 above, double-click the up.net icon and you will receive a screen as shown below. Enter your Login ID in the User name field and your password exactly as shown on your profile sheet. Click Connect to dial. Once connected, open your web browser or email client.


 


Use following steps if you need to make changes to an existing connection, such as, change a phone number or set dialing preferences.

To get in the properties for the dial-up connection you wish to modify, open up the Dial Up Networking window and Right-click on the connection you wish to modify. Select properties from the drop-down menu and select Properties with the left mouse button.



 


Change your access phone number.

Enter your new phone number in the Telephone number field, if the number is a local call, uncheck the box that says Use area code and dialing properties.

Click Ok.

 


Enter up.net DNS numbers.
 To manually setup your DNS addresses for the up.net connection, select the Networking tab then click the radio button next to Specify name server addresses. In the Primary DNS field enter 205.242.56.10. In the Secondary DNS field, enter 205.242.56.11. Click Ok.


 


Change your dialing preferences.
The following screen will allow you to customize how your computer dials up to the internet. These settings are self-explanatory, you may set them to fit your personal needs.


 


To use the World Wide Web

To use the World Wide Web or your web browser, find the Internet Explorer icon. You can now find this icon by clicking on your Start button. Double click on it to bring up your web browser. In the address box type in the web site that you would like to appear and press the Enter key on your keyboard (an example of a web site address is: http://www.up.net). Another way to call up a web site you would like to view is to click File and Open from the pull down menu in Internet Explorer. In the Open box type in the web site you would like to view (example: www.BaragaTelephone.com )


Make UP.net your home page

Start Internet Explorer per the instructions above. Click Tools and Internet Options from the pull down menu located at the top of the Internet Explorer window. Three options should be listed on the Internet Options window. Find the Home Page option (usually listed at the top of the Internet Options window). In the Address box type in http://www.up.net and click the Ok button.


How to Disconnect from the Internet

Double click on the up.net icon on your desktop. You can also double click on the computer monitors on your Taskbar by your clock. The up.net Status window should appear. Click the Disconnect button to disconnect from the Internet. We ask up.net customers to please disconnect from the Internet when you are not using it so modems can be made available to other up.net customers.
