Windows 98 Dial-up Setup

These instructions will help customers with Windows 98 only. If you have any other version of Windows installed, please look at the other directions available on our Technical Support web site.

Requirements:
Windows 98 Installed and working properly.
28.8 modem or higher installed and working properly.

Getting Started:

Windows98 has an Internet "Connection Wizard" that makes connecting to the Internet easy. Follow these directions to set your computer up for the up.net Internet connection. First time Windows98 users might have a icon on the desktop labeled "Connect to the Internet". This shortcut can be used to call up the Wizard. If you do not have this icon on your desktop, click on the "Start" button, then "Programs", "Internet Explorer", and finally, "Connection Wizard". You may find that your program returns slightly different screens, or skips screens. There are a number of different program versions available, so this variance is normal. All of our setup data is here, so even if the screens are slightly different, you will have all the information you need to continue (it's also on the Customer Profile sheet with your password).

This Wizard can be run several times, and you can usually choose the "<Back" button if you need to repeat a step. If a screen has multiple areas for input, you can use the TAB key to switch boxes, or simply click on the box with your mouse to fill it in. Once you've started the Wizard.  Make sure the correct option (I have an existing Internet account through my phone line or a local area Network(LAN). Help me set up my computer to connect to this Internet account.) is selected. The press the "Next >" button to get to this next screen:

Set the option shown to use an Internet Service Provider. Click again on the "Next >" button.

You'll be using the telephone line to dial up to the Internet, so make sure the "Connect using my phone line" option is selected. Click again on the "Next >" button.

Uncheck the box next to the "Dial using the area code and country code" option, then enter the telephone number for your local dial up connection. To determine your phone number, consult your Customer Profile sheet or call the up.net helpline. After entering the phone number, click on the "Next >" button.

Type your user name(login id) from the Customer Profile sheet you were given with your up.net registration. It will begin with 3 lower case letters and will be followed by five numerals. Then type in the password you were given. The password that you type in will only appear on the screen as *'s for security reasons. Be SURE that you type your password in EXACTLY as it was given to you (without spaces). Both the user name and password are CASE SENSITIVE! Click on the "Next >" button.

You will need to change the Advanced Settings for this connection so select the option "Yes" and click the "Next" button to call up the next screen.

Select the option "PPP" and click the "Next" button.

Make sure the option "I don't need to type anything when loggin on" is selected as your Logon Procedure and click the "Next" button.

up.net automactically assigns IP address so select the option "My Internet service provider automatically assigns me one." and click the "Next" button.

The next window to appear will be the DNS Server Address window. Select the option "Always use the following" and enter in the DNS server address 205.242.56.13 in the DNS server box. Enter 205.242.56.14 in the Alternate DNS server box and click the Next button.

Type in up.net as the Connection name and click the Next button.

To use Outlook Express for e-mail client select the "Yes" option and click the Next button.

In the Display name box type in your name as you want it to appear in e-mail messages. I used John Doe as an example. Click the Next button.

In the E-mail address box type in your up.net e-mail name followed by @up.net. You can find your E-mail name on your up.net Customer Profile sheet. Note that I used mailbox as my E-mail name in the example. Click the Next button.

The E-mail Server Names window will appear. In the Incoming mail box type in pop.up.net . In the Outgoing mail box, type in smtp.up.net. Click the Next button.

The Internet Mail Logon window will appear next. The POP account name should already be filled in for you. Enter your up.net e-mail name Password for this account in the Password box. Most of the time, but not always this is the same as your login id password. Note that your Password is case sensitive and needs to be typed as it appears on your Customer Profile sheet. For security reasons, when you type in your Password, it will appear as "*" so be careful when you type it in as you will not be able to see what you are typing. Click the Next button.

In the Internet mail account name box delete what is currently in the box and type in your up.net e-mail name for this account. Click the Next button.

Finish the wizard by clicking the Finish button. You are now ready to connect to the Internet. To connect, click the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop.
