Mac OS 8.5 - 9.1 Dial-Up Setup

These instructions will help customers with Mac OS only. If you have any other version of Mac OS 8.5 - 9.1 installed, please look at the other directions available on our Technical Support web site.

Requirements:
Mac OS Installed and working properly.
28.8 modem or higher installed and working properly.

Getting Started:

MacOS 8.5x - 9.1 have an Internet Setup Assistant that makes connecting to the Internet easy. Follow these directions to set your computer up for the up.net Internet Connection. You may find that your program returns slightly different screens, or skips screens. There are a number of different program versions available, so this variance is normal. All of our setup data is here, so even if the screens are slightly different, you will have all the information you need to continue. (It's also on the Customer Profile sheet with your password.)

This Assistant can be run several times, and you can usually choose the back arrow button if you need to repeat a step. If a screen has multiple areas for input, you can use the TAB key to switch boxes, or simply click on the box with your mouse to fill it in. You can start the Assistant by clicking on the Apple Menu in the upper left hand corner and selecting Internet Access and then selecting the Internet Setup Assistant. Once you started the Assistant, you should see something similar to:

Click the Yes button to bring up the next screen.

Again click the Yes button to bring up the next screen.

Click the right arrow to continue with the Assistant.

Enter up.net for the name of this connect that you are going to create. You will be using a modem to connect to the Internet, so make sure you have the Modem option selected as shown in Figure 4. Click the right arrow to continue the Assistant.

The Modem Setings window should appear as in Figure 5. From the modem pull down list, select the modem you have connected to your Mac.

(Note: If you don't know what kind of modem you have in your Mac, consult your documentation that came with your computer or the place you bought your Mac to find out what kind of modem you have.)

Most Mac modems will be on the Modem Port of your Mac, so make sure that the modem port is selected as shown in Figure 5. Once you have the proper information selected click the right arrow.

Special Note: up.net will not be held responsible for long distance charges if you dial a long distance phone number to connect to the Internet. Please read the up.net Terms and Conditions to find more about avoiding long distance charges. If you dial a long distance, your telephone company or your long distance carrier will bill you. If you have any questions, or you think this may be a long distance phone number, stop what you are doing and all us at 1 (800) 290-2209.

The Configuration information window will appear next. In the phone number box, type in the up.net phone number for your area. You can find this information on your up.net Customer Profile sheet. (Note: DO NOT put your personal phone number in this box, as it will not work. In general, the phone number should never be longer than 7 digits.)

Enter in your Login ID from your up.net Customer Profile Sheet in the login name, or user ID box. Make sure you type it in as it appears. (NOTE: The prefix of your Login ID is usually three letters followed by 5 digits. The prefix letters should always be lower case. Remembers that the last 5 digits are numbers and not the letter O with some numbers at the end.)

Next enter your password from your up.net Customer Profile sheet in the Password box. You must be careful about typing in the password because your password is CASE SENSITIVE. You must type it as it appears on your Customer Profile sheet in order to connect to the Internet. Click the right arrow once you have entered this information in correctly.

up.net does not require a Connection Script in order to connect to the Internet. Select the No option. Click the right arrow to continue the Internet Assistant.

up.net automactically assigns IP addresses to users when they connect to the Internet. Under the question "Is there an IP address for this configuration?" select No and click the right arrow.

The Domain Name Server window will appear next. In the box provided, enter the DNS addresses listed below as they appear. These numbers (have changed since this document was produced) are also on your up.net Customer Profile sheet:

205.242.56.13
205.242.56.14

In the Domain Name box, enter in up.net (all lowercase). Click the right arrow.

The E-mail address and password window appears next. In the address box, enter in your e-mail name followed by @up.net. Your e-mail name can be found on your Customer Profile sheet. If you have two e-mail names, you will need to configure Outlook Express later for the second e-mail account. An example of what your e-mail address should look like is below:

mailbox@up.net

In the example above, my e-mail name was mailbox.

Next enter your password for this e-mail account in the password box. You can find your password listed on your up.net Customer Profile sheet. You must be careful about typing in the password because it is CASE SENSETIVE. You must type it in as it appears on your Customer Profile sheet. Click the right arrow to continue.

The E-mail account and host computer window will come up next. Enter your e-mail name followed by @pop.up.net in the e-mail accont box. An example of what your e-mail account should look like is below:

mailbox@pop.up.net

In the example above, I used mailbox as my e-mail name. You can find your e-mail name on your Customer Profile sheet. Enter smtp.up.net in the e-mail hosts (smtp) box. Click the right arrow after you enter in the proper information.

Enter news.up.net in the NNTP box. THERE IS NO LONGER A NEWS SERVER. SO LEAVE THIS BLANK. Click the right arrow.

Figure 13

up.net does not use a proxy server so select the No option. Click the right arrow.

The Conclusion window will come up next as shown in Figure 14. Make sure that there is a check mark in the box Connect when finished. Before you click the Go Ahead button, take a minute to make sure that your phone line is properly connected to your Mac. If you have no idea how to connect your phone line to your Mac, look in the documentation that came with your Mac. If you feel that your Mac is properly connected to the phone line, click the Go Ahead button.

Your Mac will flash a couple of windows before it dials into the Internet. The first window will tell you that it's adding the Internet configuration so your computer can access up.net.

The next window that appears will report the message "Finishing". Your Mac should start to dial out. After a few seconds, your Mac will connect to the Internet and you will be left with a blank desktop. You are now dialed into the Internet using up.net.
