April Showers
Thursday, April 01 2004 @ 07:29 AM EST
Contributed by: homer@up.net
April, a word probably of Etruscan origin, brings to mind many things. First (no pun intended) would be fools and hoaxes. A couple of the more memorable were the Taco Liberty Bell of 1996 and the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest of 1957. You may already have your personal favorite.

Second to mind are Spring Showers. These showers, eventually leading to May flowers, will definitely lead first to lightning! And lightning and electronic equipment in the house do not mix well; modems get fried, TV's get zapped, and computers get burned. If an April Shower in your area has the chance of turning into a thunderstorm please please please unplug any electronics you don't want to file a homeowners insurance claim on.

Musicians!
Thursday, March 11 2004 @ 03:40 PM EST

Some information for all you musicians out there! Here's a cool website that offers one of the best pieces of software for recording your music on your pc. Once recorded you will probably want to convert your song to mp3. After that, it's time to upload that song to a website so others can listen, download, and buy your music online! You might want to check out D-E-M-O, they have a lot of helpful tips for aspiring musicians.

Technically, once you have recorded your song or have written it down on sheet music it is copyrighted. However, for your own protection, you may want to consider getting it copyrighted through the Library of Congress. By registering with the Library of Congress you can avoid any disputes over who really wrote that song. There is a $30.00 fee for registering your work with Library of Congress, but you can save money by sending in multiple songs on one CD or tape.

Finally, once you start playing lives gigs and having your songs broadcast over the radio or tv, you will want someone to help you collect those royalty checks. There are several companies out there to help you with that: ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. Each of these companies has various requirements for becoming a member.

You can find other helpful links here. Good luck!

Night Sights (or what you miss when you sleep)
Tuesday, February 17 2004 @ 03:15 PM EST

What's going on here??? That's not the sun, that's the moon surrounded by halos! Taken at ~0530 EST on 5 Feb 2004, this photo shows: one Moon, two parhelia (sun dogs, but in this case moon dogs), one 22 degree halo, one faint parhelic circle, one circumzenithal arc, and maybe (if you tilt your head just right) an upper tangent arc! Oh, and one barn, the roof of one sauna, and one pine tree.

Formed by the interaction of light and ice crystals in the atmosphere, these amazing halos are usually associated with the Sun, but they (obviously) do occur around the moon as well. These are the so-called "common" halos, which implies there are also unusual and infrequent halos.

Next time you're out on a cold, clear night look up - chances are you'll see something interesting!
